What is Interlock Knit Fabric?

Interlock knit fabric is a double-knit fabric made using two sets of needles, resulting in a fabric that is thicker, more durable, and has less stretch compared to single-knit fabrics. It is one of the most stable and versatile knits, offering a smooth texture on both sides.

Made using a circular knitting machine that uses two needle beds, it creates a fabric with a unique structure where the loops interlock, hence the name.
Interlock fabric has great drape and feels substantial, making it a go-to fabric for fashion and apparel.

Structure & Composition

Interlock knit fabric is known for its double-layered structure, which provides a smooth finish on both sides of the fabric, unlike single-knit fabrics that have a distinct right and wrong side.

Double-Faced: Both the front and back sides are smooth, providing symmetry and making it easy to use either side.
Tighter Knit: Due to the two-needle bed construction, interlock fabric is tightly knitted and has a denser texture, which results in greater durability and warmth.
Balanced Stretch: While not as stretchy as fabrics containing spandex, interlock knit still has moderate stretch and excellent recovery, making it perfect for fitted garments that need structure.
No Curling: Unlike jersey fabrics, interlock knit does not curl at the edges, making it easier to sew and maintain, especially in clothing hems and seams.

Knitting Process of Interlock Fabric

Circular Knitting Machine Setup: Interlock fabric is made on a circular knitting machine using two sets of needles (needle beds). These work together to form a double-layered fabric, where loops from each needle bed interlock.
Interlocking Stitch Formation: The front needle bed creates loops that face outward, while the back needle bed creates loops that interlock with the front loops, giving the fabric its smooth, uniform finish on both sides. This dense, durable structure is built row by row.
Finishing: After the knitting process, the fabric may go through dyeing, shrinking, and other finishing processes to enhance its look, feel, and performance.
